Living life to the full

Living life to the Full – Does the Internet help us live life to the full? In what ways does it help us. How does it prevent us?

Living life to the full – that is the best policy. I agree with that one must do what he/she likes and wants to do without harming the others of course. There are people who want more emotions and drive, and there are some who prefer quiet life. Everyone lives in a different way. Everyone lives the way he thinks is right. And if you think that you don’t live your life in the full, you should fix it immediately.

Does the Internet help us live life to the full? I think yes, it does!. The Internet opens up new possibilities to recognise the world and to receive more knownedge in a short time. With the Internet, you can see what is going on in another place or even in another country far away from your place, it became possible to see places, things or events that you would never see without it. With the Internet, you can learn much more and faster. In a word, it saves time. But on the other hand…

You can spend hours on the Internet without noticing. And then it is a waste of time if you use the Internet for entertainment. In a word if you don’t use the internet correctly it can vice versa completely disorganize your life.

Saying goodbye

Another year is ending. But that is not a regular year like our another last 11 – years. That is our last year of school. I really want to spend this last year with good emotions and memories at our school, but in real life it doesn’t work like that. And in fact, I don’t spend much time at school. But no time to regret. I can say that this year has been really good. Тhere were even some surprises.

My life was changed in a short term. Everything changed very quickly and I couldn’t keep up with it. I started to spend my time on other things and study more. I think that now we all need more motivation, inspiration and of course health. And then we’ll be all right. The main thing is that in our employment we do not forget about rest. But at the same time, always remember your goal and go to it.

But now I can’t say goodbye. I can’t say goodbye, because I can’t imagine that this is the end of my school life. That I won’t go to school next year…

Whatever happens in life, always go forward without regretting and without looking back and also try not to make the same mistakes.

Who inspires you the most

Inspiration is one of the the most important things in our life. Inspiration can help us move forward and not stop halfway.
Еach person can be inspired differently. Some are inspired by what they hear, others by what they see, or all of this together. I am inspired by different things. These are mainly people. That is what they do, their actions, their character. Or it’s all together. That’s always different.  I think that in each person there is something that I like about him, it’s just that some people have more of these qualities.  And I especially those who are not alike me and my character. They inspire me to create, to have new thoughts, maybe actions. They make me think.

Should plastic surgery be used for cosmetic reasons?

I think that this is not a question anyway, because most of the people do plastic surgery exactly because of this reason. Very few do this because of need. Every year plastic surgery becomes more and more popular. Now people take it more calmly. It has already become ordinary for everyone. But despite this, I hope, people prefer natural beauty more. If a person is beautiful, others suspect that he or she has done a plastic surgery and if he/she did not do it, then he can become better in the others’eyes. And perhaps more beautiful. But despite this, many people do not like their face or body. So they boost their self-esteem by doing plastic surgery. Alas it has also major side effects and can harm. If it is necessary or won’t harm I don’t think it is bad, but I also believe that you need to love yourself as you are. And I also think that our face is the reflection of our inner world.
Anyway, everyone should come to this decision consciously.

Unpaid community work

Some people think certain prisoners should be made to do unpaid community work instead of being put behind bars.

Such practice indeed exist. I know that it is popular in America for example, but not widespread around the world. As to me it is a good way for the prisoners and for us to keep our environment clean. Also the prisoners will pay more attention to the environment and they will stop polluting it themselves after this. Оf course it doesn’t work like that with everyone. But this is better than nothing. And it’s better than keeping them behind bars. Freedom is very important for everyone. And the prisoners would rather choose that instead of being put behind bars.
Anyway I think that it is necessary to make exceptions for those people who have poor health, because this work is very hard…
In my opinion, in some countries this is not practiced, because it is more expensive for them than keeping prisoners behind bars. For the prisoners all tools must be prepared for this work. And they need to send police officers with each prisoner, although prisoners usually have to work together…
And it would be great if there was such a punishment in our country.
I think that in this way other people would also value the environment more.

Slowly, Slowly in the Wind

Choose one of the short stories, read and understand it. write down the unknown words and expressions and give their definitions. Write your opinion about the story you have read.

<<Slowly, Slowly in the Wind>>

This criminal story is about a mediocore old man who killed his neighbor. This story is not bad but I can’t say that’s a good story too. I can’t understand the characters at all. Тheir actions are unjustified. I don’t think real people behave, or act this way. I think this story a little unrealistic. And the idea with a scarecrow is good but not finalized. In a word there is a lot of incomprehensible in this story.

We are more advanced now

A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem important.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

I don’t think that people are judged according to only these values. I hope they aren’t. Though I don’t deny the fact that it can be true in our reality. I think it depends on our mind. In other words it depends on each person separately and on our view of life. I’m sure that honour, kindness and trust will always be valuable!!! Concerning social status I believe that people nowdays are not materialists. Surely there are many people who judge according to that but also there are many others who don’t pay attention to the status. Time’s changed but people haven’t changed much. On the contrary, people have become smarter. I think now everyone appreciates a person’s inner qualities, knowledge, sincerity, openness and faithfulness more than social status. Now people, especially young people, are more advanced than in old times.

Exercises

I. Match the titles with the paragraphs.

1. Perfect for a quiet holiday — B

2. Land of nature wonders — A

3. Bad for animals — E

4. A visit to the zoo — F

5. Perfect for an active holiday — C

6. Difficult start — D

7. New perspectives

8. New rules to follow — G

A. The mountains of Scotland (we call them the Highlands) are a wild and beautiful part of Europe. A golden eagle flies over the mountains. A deer walks through the silence of the forest. Salmon and trout swim in the clean, pure water of the rivers. Some say that not only fish swim in the deep water of Loch Ness. Speak to the people living by the Loch. Each person has a story of the monster, and some have photographs.

B. Tresco is a beautiful island with no cars, crowds or noise — just flowers, birds, long sandy beaches and the Tresco Abbey Garden. John and Wendy Pyatt welcome you to the Island Hotel, famous for delicious food, comfort and brilliant service. You will appreciate superb accommodation, free saunas and the indoor swimming pool.

C. The Camel and Wildlife Safari is a unique mixture of traditional and modern. Kenya’s countryside suits the Safari purposes exceptionally well. Tourists will have a chance to explore the bush country near Samburu, to travel on a camelback or to sleep out under the stars. Modern safari vehicles are always available for those who prefer comfort.

D. Arrival can be the hardest part of a trip. It is late, you are road-weary, and everything is new and strange. You need an affordable place to sleep, something to eat and drink, and probably a way to get around. But in general, it’s a wonderful trip, full of wonderful and unusual places. Whether it is the first stop on a trip or the fifth city visited, every traveler feels a little overwhelmed stepping onto a new street in a new city.

E. No zoo has enough money to provide basic habitats or environments for all the species they keep. Most animals are put in a totally artificial environment, isolated from everything they would meet in their natural habitat. Many will agree that this isolation is harmful to most of the zoo inhabitants, it can even amount to cruelty.

F. A new London Zoo Project is a ten-year project to secure the future for the Zoo and for many endangered animals. The plan has been devised by both animal and business experts to provide world-leading accommodation for all our animals, to more fully engage and inform people about conservation issues, to redesign certain aspects of Zoo layout.

G. Leave-no-trace camping is an increasingly popular approach to travel in wilderness areas. As the term suggests, the goal is for the camper to leave as little impact as possible on the place he is visiting. One of its mottos is “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints.” Its simplest and most fundamental rule is: pack it in, pack it out, but it goes beyond that.

II. Insert the sentences given below into the spaces A – F

Scotland Yard

Scotland Yard is the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police in London. To most people, its name immediately brings to mind the picture of a detective — cool, efficient, ready to track down any criminal, or a helmeted police constable — A________2___________ and trusty helper of every traveler from overseas.

Scotland Yard is situated on the Thames Embankment close to the Houses of Parliament and the familiar clock tower of Big Ben, and its jurisdiction extends over 740 square miles with the exception of the ancient City of London, B_______4__________.

One of the most successful developments in Scotland Yard’s crime detection and emergency service has been the “999 system”. On receipt of a call the 999 Room operator ascertains by electronic device the position of the nearest available police car, C _______1___________. Almost instantly a message is also sent by teleprinter to the police station concerned so that within seconds of a call for assistance being received, a police car is on its way to the scene. An old-established section of the Metropolitan police is the Mounted Branch, with its strength of about 200 horses stabled at strategic points. These horses are particularly suited to ceremonial occasions, D ______3____________.

An interesting branch of Scotland Yard is the branch of Police Dogs, first used as an experiment in 1939. Now these dogs are an important part of the Force. One dog, for example, can search a warehouse in ten minutes, E ___7______.

There is also the River Police, or Thames Division, which deals with all crimes occurring within its river boundaries.

There are two other departments of Scotland Yard – the Witness Room (known as the Rogues’ Gallery) where a photographic record of known and suspected criminals is kept, and the Museum, F ______5___________.

1. which is contacted by radio

2. that familiar figure of the London scene

3. for they are accustomed to military bands

4. which possesses its own separate police force

5. which contains murder relics and forgery exhibits

6. that this policeman will bring the criminal to justice

7. whereas the same search would take six men an hour

1. What I’m looking forward to most this year is…

Every year I have a lot of expectations about my future. And every year they are different. But actually this year I am more inspired. I can’t say for sure why. I think I have begun this year differently and now I notice little changes in my life. I’m sure, it’s a good start. But I guess that’s not enough. Much work must be done this year and I am getting ready for that. Anyway I’ll do my best to work more. I think that’s the first point, which helps a person to achieve his goal. I’ll try to be inspired and don’t stop halfway. I can say for sure that this year I am looking forward to more good emotions, fun and productivity.

2. Your best friend asks your opinion about something, but you know that a truthful answer will hurt her fillings. What do you do?

I believe that best friends must be honest and trust each other. If she is my best friend, I guess she is ready to hear the truth. She knows what I feel, my character and who I am in general. If she knows that, she also knows that I am a straightforward person, I like to tell the truth and it’s not a problem that she gets upset because of the truth. If we don’t like something we need to change it. Everything dipends on us and our thoughts. Bitter truth is better than a sweet lie.

3. Your school is trying to decide on a famous person to give a speech or presentation to students. Who do you think they should choose?

I think this should be a person who can teach students something new and present new skills in a short time. He has to make the students think about many things and keep the audience till the end. It must be a wise person. To my opinion, a famous writer is the best candidate. Firstly, he will have a rich and interesting speech.I think famous writers should know human’s psychology  better than others to create different characters. Actually I hope, he will understand students better, so the conversation will be pleasant, heartwarming and productive.

My year review

Every year we sum up our lessons. This year to my happiness should tell about our English lessons. I enjoyed our English lessons as they were more interesting. This year I don’t know why I understood the new topics better then ever and I was fond of the text books. Each lesson was full of new information, new words and interesting texts. Though I was often absent during the year, I learned much in English and I am really satisfied with the knowledge I got. I hope that next year will ber as much productive as this one. I will do my best to approve my english and get more knowledge, more new information and new skills.

How your nationality dresses

I think people in Armenia get dressed in different styles. But it’s doesn’t matter. I think it’s not bad. It’s good if you wear in your own style. But many people in Armenia like black color. I don’t think that is bad, but if you wear only black colour… I think your life must be more colourful and clothes can help you in this situation. Any clothes can inspire you and improve your mood. There are many globalized styles and our stile is similar.

My dream job

It is high time to think about the profession I would like to get.

Of course a dream job would be the one which takes less energy but gives much money. Joke!! A dream job is the one which you enjoy. It would be better if your job is your hobby as well.

The thing is that draw well. My teacher and those who have seen my pictures advise me to become a designer. I am fond of drawing but I haven’t made up my mind yet.

My parents advise me to become a psychologist. It’s an interesting profession that helps people much. It demands several main qualities like patience, tranquility, understanding, ability of keeping one’s secrets. It demands much knowledge as well in order not to touch patient’s feelings and not to hurt.

I think both are good for me. In one hand being a designer is enough modern now in another hand being a psychologist is more helpful for people. I don’t think the salary makes much sense as even if the job is well-paid but you don’t enjoy it, it can become a real torture for you.

The liar

Every Saturday or Sunday we visit my grandmother. This weekend we were going there as usual but before getting there we changed our route and went to a mole first. After the shopping a good-looking woman approached us quickly and asked a little money. She explained thoroughly that she was robbed and had no money for returning home. We gave her money without hesitating. In an hour when we were already at my grandma’s district we saw the same woman asking another man for money, telling the same story.

Grammar: Prepositions — Interactive exercise

Replace all the missing prepositions and adverbs from this extract from the story.:

“Let’s follow it…”
“It could be anywhere by now, couldn’t it!”
But Wells was already talking into the radio. “Car PB to base. Suspicious vehicle speeding west along Esplanade, near east Pavillion. Could be the missing Fiesta. We’re following it, but slowly due to fog. Over.”
The mist was patchy; then suddenly, as they drove in front of the Imperial Hotel, it lifted, and a long line of lights stretched out ahead of them, picking out the gentle curve of the Esplanade as far as the harbour. There was no traffic, just cars standing empty at the roadside. Apart from the streetlamps, the only other lights to be seen were in the distance at the harbourside, where a group of cars seemed to be parked at the water’s edge. Bradstock switched on the blue flashing light, and Wells accelerated.

Prepositions:

They could hear the sound of the waves slopping against the foot of the sea wall, fifteen feet
below them.
Bradstock leaned over. “High tide,” he remarked.
“Yeah,” said Wells. “Going out now. Let’s walk along as far as the rocks. There’ll be enough sand by now.”
Bradstock switched on his walkie-talkie. At the end of the Esplanade, narrow concrete steps led
down onto the sand, above the high water mark.
“Smugglers,” said the youth, as Wells cut the cloth from round his mouth. “We were just walking along when we saw this fishing boat coming in through the mist, so we went over to watch; then all these men got off it, without saying a word.

Problems to be solved

I. Even though nobody likes to talk about problems,  everybody still talks about their problems with other people! Problems are actually a good topic for discussion since they could help others relate to each other and even present solutions too. A few fine examples of questions are:How do you deal with your problems?

What problems do you come across in your school or life?

Do you feel that problems are opportunities? Why or why not?

What was the last problem you solved and how did you do it?

“Problems don’t matter. Solutions do.” Do you agree or disagree?

I have many problems, but problems don’t matter. I don’t like to talk about my problems because I know that I can solve them myself. And it doesn’t matter now or later. For example one of my problems is that I am at home all the time. I like my house and it is very comfortable, but I want to get out, too. Every problem needs its solution and this problem too. And for this I only need to recover a soon as possible. I can give an example, writing essays is a problem for me, but I have just found a solution. My teacher encouraged me to write. I think I’ll try to write more and more.

I want to talk about my sister’s problems, because she has a lot of problems in her school. She has a lot of homework every day and she doesn’t have time for anything. And I think it is bad for her. But this problem has a solution too…

And I think she can solve her problems without me.

Yes, I think that problems are opportunities. It makes you stronger. And then you can solve more difficult problems and find easier solutions.
